Trap shooting
Trap shooting is the original clays sport. It involves shooting at 5 fixed
stations 16 yards behind a “trap house”. In the trap house is an automatic
machine which is oscillating left to right. The machine throws the targets
out at 5 different angles from straight away to soft left, soft right and
hard left, hard right. The shooter never knows where the target is going to
be thrown but they do know it will be one of the 5 predetermined angles
above.
A perfect score is 25 out of 25. The average
league shooter breaks about 18 to 22 out of 25 targets. The beginner can
expect to start out breaking 2-6 targets if they have never shot before. If
they have hunted and are experienced with a shot gun they can expect to
break in the teens. Many shooters have never broken a 25 and others have
done it 100’s of times. Once the mechanics of the sport are learned it is
the mental part and the effects of Mother Nature (mostly wind) that often
determine if you hit or miss the target. Boxhorn’s offers year round trap
leagues and open shooting.
Sporting Clays
Sporting clays is the most difficult of all the three
clay shooting sports offered at Boxhorn. We have a 13 station course. It is
shot as 50 targets or 100 targets. You should use an automatic or a double
barrel shotgun to shoot it proficiently. A pump shotgun will work but you
will miss many second targets. You receive 4, 6, or 8 targets per station
depending upon if you are shooting a 50 target event or a 100 target event.
The targets not only vary in speed, distance, and angle but also in size.
From the minis which are about 2 inches in diameter, to the middies which
are about 3 ½ inches to a full size trap target. We have “rabbits” which
roll along the ground. A great score in Sporting clays is a 45 of 50 or 80+
of 100. This event is great practice for hunting and is a bit more casual
than trap or 5 stand with many shooters talking “smack” as their fellow
shooters are about to shoot or have finished. Boxhorn’s offers league and
open shooting in sporting clays year round.
Five Stand Shooting League
Five Stand is a “mini” version of sporting Clays. You shoot it on a trap
field. Out in the trap field are 4 trap machines. We also use the main trap
house. The machines in the field throw crossing targets and incoming
targets. Each machine is numbered 1 through 5. At each trap shooting post is
a sign that has number combinations on it. An example would be 1-3, 2-5, 3.
At each station you shoot 5 targets. Two pairs and one single. In the
example above your first shoot a pair from machines 1 and 3, your second
pair from machines 2 and 5 and your last single would come from machine 3.
The pairs can be thrown as “true pairs” meaning they both are released at
the same time. A “report pair” meaning when you shoot at the first target
the second one is released or a “following pair where we release the second
target just a second or two after the first but before you shoot at the
first target. On our course all targets are full size targets. This means
there are hundreds of different target angles on this game. We not only
regularly change the angles of the targets but the machine combinations at
each station. We offer five stand open and league shooting from May through
September.
